Baby and Toddler Feeding On Holiday

If you are travelling with your baby you should try to keep to as similar a feeding routine as you have at home. If you are travelling abroad to a different time zone, you can make short adjustments to their feeding times before you leave therefore making it easier to adjust on arrival. If you are bottle feeding abroad pay close attention to the water you are using to make a babies feed. In most parts of Europe and America boiled tap water is considered safe, but in other areas it is advisable to use reputable bottled water, after you have checked that the seal is intact. If you do not have access to sterilising equipment or a microwave, it is advisable to use disposable pre-sterilised feeding bottles. If your baby is at the weaning stage it is a good idea to take compact food preparation units with you.

If you are travelling with your toddler; unless you intend to be fully self catering; the likelihood is you will be eating out in restaurants a lot more than usual. As we all know, dining out with your toddler can either be a wonderful, fun experience, when you sit there glowing with pride; or an experience when you wish the ground would open up and swallow you whole!! In most recognised holiday destinations, toddlers will be welcome guests, but this may not guarantee the restaurants will have booster seats.

Tips:

  • If travelling to a different time zone adjust feeding times in much the same way as you adjust sleeping times prior to departing to help adjustment on arrival
  • If bottle feeding, make sure you can take all the necessary sterilising equipment with you. If this is not possible consider taking pre-sterilised disposable feeding bottles. Although a little more expensive, you can pre pack as many as required, and remember this will free up suitcase space for the return trip with any gifts!!
  • For long car journeys it is a good idea to pack ‘thermal bottle warmers’ which can be plugged into any vehicle lighter to warm food and bottles as you drive
  • For weaning babies, mini food preparation units are great for travel purposes. You can ensure your baby continues with their healthy diet just as at home. Make sure you have enough plug adapters.
  • Portable booster seats are a must if you are travelling with a toddler. The familiarity of sitting in their own special seat can go a long way to creating a tantrum free meal experience.
