Protecting your family, pets and home from the risks of open fires, log burners, multi fuel burners, gas and electric fire appliances is a key consideration, particularly as the weather gets colder and we turn the heating up.
The choices of barriers available may seem rather confusing. There are many different labels applied to such products in the industry including nursery guard, fire screen, spark guards, surrounds and fireguards to name a few.
To keep it simple, Safetots only use the terms fire surround and fireguard.
Our fire surrounds are fixed to a wall or similar surface that restricts access to heat appliances by enclosing them on all vertical sides. They are made from metal or wood, available in different colours and are constructed using vertical poles. As such, many families find these an aesthetically pleasing solution to enclosing a fire.
Our Fireguards provide protection from all sides (vertical and horizontal) as they have an additional top mesh surface to prevent falls from above or items potentially being dropped close enough to the heat source to catch fire. All fireguards must be constructed with metal mesh and do not covert to other domestic uses. These are tested to the safety standard BS 8423:2010, the recognised standard for fireguards for domestic use.
It is worth noting that neither a fireguard nor a fire surround is intended to reduce the risk of fires caused by flying particles from the heat source. Always store the matches or other means of lighting this type of fire out of children’s reach and fit and routinely test a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. It is never advisable to leave a small child unattended.
Protecting your child from the risks of any form of heating within your home, particularly open fires, log burners, multi fuel burners, gas and electric fire appliances becomes a priority once your baby starts to roll or crawl. Developing independent mobility may happen as soon as 3 months old so it is advisable to consider how you will keep your child safe from these risks early on.

We are able to test our Fireguards to the BS standard BS 8423:2010. A fireguard is a product intended to limit access to heat appliances and open fires in a domestic setting. To limit access, it requires a top, front and sides.
Our Fire Surrounds, having no top surface, do not fulfil this definition and so are not able to be tested to this standard. Please see our Safety Information on our Fire Surround pages for further information of the testing we apply to Fire Surround products.
Safetots’ fireguards come with a set of instructions to assist with installation. Please attach and position the fireguard according to these instructions.
IMPORTANT – The fireguard must be assembled before use and fitted securely according to these instructions to provide adequate protection. Position the fireguard so that all parts of it are at least 300mm away from any exposed burning fuel, heated elements or radiants.
Children’s skin may be more sensitive to temperature than an adult’s so check that the fireguard or objects close to the fire do not become too hot to the touch. It is worth bearing in mind that this will be dependent on the level of heat radiating from the heat appliance so routine checking is best practice.
As tempting as it may be to use a fire as a means to dry the washing (and there’s plenty of that with small children!), this raises a risk of an item catching fire and is to be avoided. Nothing should be placed on the fireguard for the same reason. Safetots’ Fireguards will also display the following warnings:

All Safetots’ fireguards are wall mounted and as such, the surfaces to which the fixings are attached need to be structurally sound and in good condition to make certain the Screw Eyes provided are fitted securely. Use the Screw Eyes supplied for screwing directly into wood. For fixing to plastered walls, plasterboard, concrete or brick surfaces, surface preparation and separately purchased wall plugs, appropriate for the mounting surface, will be required. The wall plugs should be sized to suit a No.8 wood screw, to use with the Screw eyes supplied.
All Safetots’ fireguards have been tested and comply with the safety standard BS 8423:2010 when fitted in accordance with the instructions.
When buying a product to help keep your child out of harm’s way, Safetots believe it is worth investing in one that has been tested to a professionally approved level of safety using rigorous testing methods.
For this reason and where applicable, our products are tested to a British Standards Institution (BSI) standard and/or equivalent international standard. Each standard that our products complies with has been drawn up by a group of experts in the field. Not only do they have extensive knowledge about their product and credibility in the child safety product industry, they are also fully aware of the potential hazards posed by poor quality items being used in the home where children are involved.
The British Standard for fire guards is BS 8423:2010. You can be reassured that all Safetots’ fireguards comply with this standard and are retested whenever design upgrades are made, or components changed.

What types of tests are carried out and why?
As adults, most of us can probably remember burning our fingers on something we were told not to touch and not much has changed over the years. Children of all ages are fascinated by fire and so any heat source within the home, particularly one that glows, moves and crackles, poses a huge attraction to little ones. Any toddler left to their own devices will be tempted to prod, stoke or throw something onto a fire just like they have seen the grownups do. In an attempt to reach a fire that’s secured with a fireguard, your little adventurer is likely to try and pull the guard from its fixings, climb over the top, around or under it or force the opening section. Anything close to hand that will fit through the mesh or any gaps between the guard and fixings will be used to assist them on their heat seeking mission. Younger tots on the other hand, may grasp the fire guard to help them get up on their feet and take steps or even use it as a teething aid.
The standard specifies a variety of tests including testing for the durability of smaller components such as the fixings when the fireguard is manipulated and put under pressure. Impact tests are carried out from various angles to determine its resilience to crashes and bangs and mesh aperture size is measured for acceptable dimensions. Some tests mimic a small child attempting to climb or place heavy objects onto the fireguard to ensure the guard is robust. The method of fixing the guard is investigated to confirm that it is not in direct contact with the heating appliance and any surface coatings are checked for heat resistance and the safety of the chemicals within these.
In short, every effort has been made to ensure that a fireguard complying with BS 8423:2010 will be a hazard free product to purchase when safety proofing your home.
